Oh me lad me Sunderland lad, with bonny blue eyes and dark brown hair, upon the battles 'bloody plain' he's sure to tak his own part there. Proudly he marched away from home without any fear of danger, but little he knew by Tunstal hillside, he would sleep in the land of a stranger...you will always be our hero Uncle Billy, remenbered always by Nephew Harold and great nephews Stephen, Ian William John andMichael Thompson.

My father would have been 100 years old this year but I never knew his birthday...I was three years old when he was killed.

As a child in 1960/70's I lived next door to Eric Swinney's mother. A lovely, sweet lady in Darras Hall, Ponteland, Northumberland. Her cottage was on Woodside and called Geelong (a reference to Australian connection) since demolished. I remember a colour-tinted photo of Eric which hung pride of place in her cottage. I was and am still a great horse-lover. 'Nana Swinney' gave me a hunting crop which belonged to her son Eric which I have treasured, it has spent time in the USA when I lived there and now resides in our Farmhouse in Derbyshire . Wish I'd asked more about Eric and how she'd coped with loss. Have seen his name in the memorial books of St Clements in London. Bless him xx
